  • Ricky Pitman, DPT

    Physical Therapy

Growing up north of Seattle in Skagit Valley, WA--Rick played baseball and showed a strong early interest in sports medicine and human movement studies. Following this passion, he attended Pacific University in Forest Grove, OR for four years where he completed a BS in exercise science and integrative physiology along with a minor in chemistry. During his time at Pacific University, he had the opportunity to do accelerometry-based research with local fire departments prior to their popularity as step counters in devices like FitBits. His research involved determining the accuracy of currently used algorithms for different wearable positions and functional activities. He was invited to present at the 2012 annual American College of Sports Medicine conference and received distinction from the organization as an outstanding undergraduate research presenter. During his summers he volunteered with medical leadership forums both nationally and internationally (Sydney Medical School) as part of the International Scholar Laureate Program. He later worked for a partner organization, traveling as needed in his summers between classes to coordinate and lead events for young aspiring medical students at various locations throughout the nation. After finishing his BS in May of 2012 he sought to take his education further and focus on rehabilitation sciences by applying to Pacific University's three year Doctorate of Physical Therapy program in Hillsboro, OR. Following acceptance, he continued his academic career at Pacific U. He completed two years of didactic work, published a critically appraised topic on rotator cuff rehabilitation, and finished 40 weeks of physical therapy clinical rotations in acute care, neurological rehabilitation, outpatient orthopedics, and geriatrics. He completed his cumulative seven year stint at Pacific University in May 2015, receiving his Doctorate of Physical Therapy (DPT). He participated actively in Phi Eta Sigma honor's society, Exercise Science club events, and worked as a program assistant to the athletic training department throughout his entire academic career.

He has since joined Chiro-Medical Group, an outpatient orthopedics and sports medicine multidisciplinary team based out of San Francisco, CA. His cumulative experience in athletic training and on-field injury management coupled with clinical orthopedic physical therapy makes him a good fit for the athletic "return to sport" patient, general aches and pains cases, or post-operative rehabilitation. He is actively certified as both an SFMA and TPI practitioner and sees a variety of rehabilitative and performance-based clientele. Further, he has experience with traditional Maitland and Mulligan mobilization with movement manual therapy techniques. His treatment sessions with patients/clients often include a mixture of manual therapy to restore mobility, corrective and focused exercise to utilize the mobility or gain stability, and neuromuscular re-education to generate improved movement mechanics to prevent future injury and increase performance. He places a strong emphasis on patient education and believes the first step to correcting a problem or changing a habit is to understand it.
